Even with the thaw it looks as though Y6K, the only bird to make a significant movement during the big freeze, has stayed near Carlisle.

On January 10 Larry Griffin went out to look for tagged whooper Y6K and found him near Aglionby east of Carlisle on a field with four inches of snow on it, feeding alongside three other whoopers and a flock of pigeons, he was ripping off and eating whole leaves of what looked like a turnip crop, the roots being frozen into the ground. This was the only green material visible in the landscape so although it was an unusual food, he was adapting to it. He had probably hoped for a better situation having moved from central Ireland, however the snow ended up affecting all parts of the UK so it seems he turned back from heading to Welney where he was expected to go. He appeared to be paired to an unringed bird and was with another unringed pair, his abdominal profile looked the same as the other birds present and he looked very alert and well. Four other swans were in the neighbouring field and Y6K joined them at final light before heading north to the River Eden. It was great to catch up with him having last seen him in Iceland.
